OBSERVATION

Teacher assigned three groups of students (two per group) to move to the back of the classroom and do an inventory on the science kits. She asked the rest of the class to quietly read their reading assignment. The students who were performing the inventory in the back of the room were at times getting a little loud and the teacher had to ask them to lower their voices. The rest of the class was staying on task and reading their books. There was one boy however, who instead of reading, was singing a variety of different rock songs and even taking requests from the other three students around him. This singing occured during the time when the teacher stepped out for about 5 minutes to drop off checks for a field trip.

REFLECTION

I liked that the teacher assigned some responsibility to the students who were doing the inventory on the science kits. It made the kids feel important and they were really interested and motivated to do it. Also, the kids who were doing their quiet reading were surprisingly engaged. Perhaps because they are 6th graders and it's their first year in a middle school. Or maybe it's the teacher. The kids really seem to respect her and they stay on task very well. Of course there was that one kid (the budding rock star) who seized an opportunity when the teacher left to practice his singing skills. Overall, the students stayed on task and were engaged in classroom activities.
